What is axial clearance?
Axial clearance can be used to describe the lost motion, the "dead time", on the lead screw due to the gap between the lead screw and the lead screw nut. What options does the igus product range offer?
In addition to selecting the right material, a pre-tensioning mechanism has proven to be an effective measure for reducing unwanted axial clearance. For our dryspin high helix threads and trapezoidal threads, there are three versions with pre-tension: zero-backlash, low-clearance and AB lead screw nut.
Zero-backlash:
► For minimal axial backlash for the entire service life
► Optimal for precise positioning and infeed movements
Low clearance:
► Ensure constant axial and radial pre-tension
► High smooth running
AB lead screw nut:
► Pre-tension by means of a spring load
► Significant reduction of self-excited oscillations and vibrations
Important note: A standard lead screw nut should always be used for applications with high loads, high temperatures or in very dirty environments. The reason for this is that the effect of all three principles is cancelled out by excessive loads. For this reason, the maximum static axial loads are specified separately for each lead screw nut version.
